자율주행자동차는 교통부문에서 4차 산업혁명을 대변하는 패러다임이다. 자율주행자동차 도입으로 인한 교통안전 향상, 도로용량 증대, 이동의 자유 등 긍정적인 효과들이 기대되는 한편으로, 차량통행 증가로 인한 주행거리 증가와 에너지 소비 증가, 전통적인 운송 산업의 고용 감소 등의 반작용에 대한 우려도 있다. 따라서 자율주행자동차 시대의 교통정책을 위하여 전체 교통체계에 미치는 영향을 종합적으로 예측하고 지속가능한 방향으로 유도할 수 있는 정책적 대응 방안에 대한 고민이 필요하다. 이와 같은 배경에서 본 연구는 자율주행자동차 시대에 직면하게 될 교통체계의 변화를 예측하고 자율주행자동차가 가져올 주요 영향과 파급 효과를 전망하여 정책 수립에 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고 향후 지속적인 논의가 필요한 정책 및 연구 주제를 제시하고자 한다.
