Research for Shared Mobility Services in Asia

1. Introduction

With the proliferation of smart technology and technological advancements, shared mobility services (SHMS) combined with transportation platforms are growing rapidly. A variety of SHMS, including cars, bicycles, and personal mobility(PM), are available through easy booking and payment using a smartphone. As concerns about carbon neutrality and environmental issues grow, so does the interest in shifting from car ownership to car sharing. SHMS is seen as an alternative to private and public transportation, which has been trapped in a vicious cycle of reduced quality of public transportation services and increased use of private transportation. To cope with this, research on the diffusion of SHMS is needed. In Korea, only some SHMS are growing due to a lack of social awareness and conflict among stakeholders.

Recently, Korean SHMS companies have been making inroads into overseas markets. Companies such as Kakao Mobility and Socar are active in the Asian and European markets. In the process, however, they face difficulties in quickly establishing themselves in the local market due to a lack of information about local transportation and policy uncertainty. The importance of international cooperation to solve these problems is growing. Through international joint research with the Korea Transport Institute (KOTI) and the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS), we seek to establish development strategies and policy proposals for domestic and overseas SHMS. Based on cooperation with Asian countries, we are trying to find ways to revitalize SHMS and build a sustainable transportation system. Moreover, such joint research between KOTI and EASTS enables us to conduct research and cooperation activities on various issues in the field of transportation to achieve synergies based on a mutual exchange of opinions and joint seminars on SHMS.

This study aims to share the experience of SHMS and transportation policies in Korea and Asian countries through cooperation with international academic societies, and to contribute to the revitalization of SHMS in Asian countries by promoting cooperation projects among countries on this basis.
