What is Smart Childproofing Zone?
Smart childproofing zone is a management technique centered around operational improvement to create a safe child traffic environment by applying AI-based advanced traffic safety technology and system linkage operation technology to the existing childproofing zone management.
As collection of video-based data have been increased and generalized, a variety of trials have recently been made to reduce incidents in safety management sector such as various AI-associated researches in progression and development of related equipment in process etc.
Examples of Operation in Smart Childproofing Zone
1. Smart Notification
Transportation Safety Smart Notification, a service provided via smartphone apps, is the system to predict the danger of the crash between pedestrians and vehicles such as motorcycles, personal transporters, bicycles etc. in advance and provide the information to prevent the incidents.
It is a system developed by LG Electronics (Soft V2X Solution) and characterized to collect and utilize video data from surveillance cameras, installed nearby so that it can be run without smartphones due to a mobile telecommunication technology-based service.
It is run on a trial basis in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, Gangnueng-si, Gangwon-do, Naseong-dong, Sejong in consideration of condition of child school-zone way and context of vehicle traffic etc.
2. Smart Crosswalk
Smart Crosswalk System is an incident prevention system to use the camera sensors attached to pedestrian traffic lights, detect their movement based on AI technology and provide the warning information in case of potential incidents.
As a system, run on the purpose of effectively responding to the risk of pedestrian incident that mainly occurs around crosswalks, it is broadly installed in metropolitan such as Seoul as well as a number of small and medium-sized cities in operation. It is known as the highest availability among smart childproofing zone related technologies.
3. Smart Streetlight
The system attaches various types of detectors, including surveillance cameras, to streetlights or security lighting poles to collect information. When a potential danger is detected, it uses sound and lighting devices to provide customized warning information, thereby preventing accidents.
In addition to traffic safety, the system detects dnagers related to everyday life and disaster safety. When necessary, it provides information to pedestrians and drivers through devices such as digital signage, speakers, or lighting systems.
An example of this system is the establishment of a safety management system using smart streetlights. It was initially piloted in 12 locations in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, and Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, before being fully implemented in Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do.
4. AI-based Moving Crosswalk
It is a sensitized-type pedestrian crosswalk; when a pedestrian crosses the road, AI detects it to project crosswalk and vehicle stop line on the zone.
It is a variable crosswalk that applies deep learning technology to the video clips from the cameras, installed nearby crosswalks, to distinguish vehicles and pedestrians and automatically select the sign that fits the occasions such as crosswalk and stop line on the road and project it through LED.
5. Intelligent Speed Assistant System / Your Current Speed
The intelligent speed assistance system provides drivers with appropriate speed information based on the speed limits obtained from GPS, electronic maps, and road speed signs. It issues warnings or directly controls the vehicle’s speed when the speed limit is exceeded.
This technology is universally applicable to all road types, including highways and urban roads. One of its key features is the ability to automatically control the speed of vehicles entering childproofing zones without driver intervention.
In childproofing zones, proactive safety management for pedestrians is as important as enforcing illegal driving regulations. Thus, essential functionalities for ensuring pedestrian safety should be integrated.
Smart Childproofing Zones should serve both drivers and pedestrians, offering services that include not only enforcement against illegal driving but also warning systems for pedestrian risk situations.
From a mid-to-long-term perspective, continuous investment in research and development is essential to achieve nationwide adoption of Smart Childproofing Zones and improve traffic safety. This includes analyzing children’s behavioral patterns and characteristics to develop technologies that can predict risks and prevent accidents effectively.
