As a globally recognized transport and logistics research institute, the Korea Transport Institute (KOTI) is developing transport policies and relevant technology for not only Korea but the international community through cooperation with world-renowned research organizations.
The institute periodically issues “KOTI World Brief,” an English-language report that presents the summarized results of its major basic research projects. This publication represents a collection of the most significant research that have been introduced in the latest editions of the report. This collection is broadly organized into six themes: urban transport, national land use and interregional transport, transport safety, future transport, sustainable transport, and logistics.
Chapter 1 handles the topic of urban transport, focusing on studies on trams, walking and cycling, which are the modes that facilitate urban transport and develop more refined user-centric transport policies.
Chapter 2 deals with the question of expanding the use of national land through the development of the rail transport industry and the application of various measures such as the expressway bus-only lane system.
Chapter 3 focuses on endeavors to increase transport safety as a way to establish a safer society. This chapter includes a study on the use of vehicular black boxes, which merits particular attention with regard to the prospect of creating a breakthrough in efforts to ensure transport safety.
Chapter 4 is devoted to future transport, a research topic that needs to be pursued more extensively. Based on predictions on future human behavior and social trends, this chapter presents ways for the transport system to respond to relevant changes as well as to build an appropriate transport forecast system.
Chapter 5 explores the prospect of realizing sustainable transport. This chapter helps to develop a broader perspective on this matter by presenting studies on various relevant issues such as fairness, behavioral change and international standardization in addition to the promotion of sustainability.
Finally, Chapter 6 presents major research products related to the logistics sector. It includes a study on the recently opened Gyeongin Ara Waterway, which is expected to help facilitate the logistics development in the Northeast Asian region.
Studies contained in this collection can serve as a useful guide for advanced countries as well as developing countries in understanding how Korea develops, applies and implements its transport policies and technologies.
Korea’s transport policies and technologies have helped the nation achieve its rapid economic growth, and its leading research capabilities, have always been an issue of global interest.
We publish this collection, hoping that its distribution throughout the world will help establish a more convenient and safe transportation system.
